A kitchen renovation is a construction project wearing an interiors costume. Treating it in the right order is what keeps it calm.
One: measure and record
Get accurate dimensions including ceiling height, window reveals, and the position of every service. Photograph the walls before anything is covered up.
Two: agree the layout
Fix the position of the sink, the hob, and the fridge before anything else is decided. Everything downstream depends on those three.
Three: set the budget in bands
Split it into construction, cabinetry, worktops, appliances, and finishes, then hold a contingency separately. Bands make trade-offs visible.
Four: order long-lead items
Cabinetry, stone, and appliances first. Paint and handles can be decided while the first fix is happening.
Five: sequence the trades
Strip out, first fix, plaster, floor, cabinetry, template, worktop, second fix, decorate. Skipping ahead in this list is the most common cause of rework.
Six: snag properly
Walk the room in daylight with the drawers open. A good contractor expects a snag list and welcomes it.
